ToTop Link 1.2 & 1.3 for WordPress

ToTop Link 1.2 for WordPress is out.

This simple plugin gives WordPress-powered sites an easy way to add a “return to top” link to their pages. You can see it in action here, simply scroll down the page a bit and you’ll see a “return to top” link appear.

New in v1.2: You can now completely customize the positioning of the link/graphic. All the pre-sets (top-left, bottom-right, etc.) are still there, but now you can also define your own …

New WP Plugin: ToTop Link

I’m pleased to announce the release of our latest WordPress plugin, ToTop Link.

This simple plugin gives WordPress-powered sites an easy way to add a “return to top” link to their pages. Rather than explain how it works, simply scroll down the page here and you’ll see the link image appear in the top right corner.

Settings allow you easily to adjust the positioning and style to best fit your site. As always, it’s the first version, so all …

Drupal and WordPress founders interviewed together

A bit of a landmark co-interview with opensource CMS luminaries Matt Mullenweg (founder of WordPress) and Dries Buytaert (founder of Drupal) at SchipulCon 2011 in Houston, Texas. Bear with the initial audio — the irony of tech stuff going wrong is not lost on me either.…

Adding a little honey to WordPress’ Contact Form 7 Plugin

I’ve just released a new WordPress plugin that adds honeypot functionality to the popular (and frankly, awesome) Contact Form 7 plugin for WordPress.

Built out of self-necessity, the Contact Form 7 Honeypot plugin simply gives CF7 users an additional “honeypot” element to use when building their forms. A honeypot, for those unaware, is a spam trap that attempts to prevent spam bots from clogging up forms with their junk.

This is a non-intrusive method of spam stopping that, in contrast …

Customize Drupal’s Recent Comments block

I’ve been using Drupal quite a lot recently, and one of the things that was bothering me was the Recent Comments block. It’s excellent that Drupal includes this functionality right out of the box, but that it offers no way to template or otherwise customize it (in Drupal 5.x at least) is a pain in the ass.

Specifically I want to display the comment’s author (as a link) and be able to customize the number of recent comments that are …

Hate Internet Explorer? Take a stand against IE6 browser

One of the first posts I wrote on this blog was a tiny little script that detects whether your visitor is using a particular version (or less) of Internet Explorer and then redirects them to a page explaining that they should get their ass in gear and get a better browser.

Well, my loathing of Internet Explorer has not lessened, but I have begun employing a much easier way of notifying my visitors about their poor choice of browsers.

Before …

Resetting Joomla admin password

It is a testiment to my own foul forgetfulness that I am endlessly hunting the Joomla forums for the post that explains how to reset the admin password for Joomla.

Rather, it’s not that I can’t remember how to do it – doing it is quite simple – it’s I can’t remember the values to insert.

The only way to “reset” your Joomla password is by editing the database directly. Simply:

  1. Access your database, either via phpMyAdmin or whatever program

Using Conditional Comments to Catch IE

A while back I whipped up a little script to detect and redirect visitors if they were using an old version of IE. In the comments I went on to say that a more effective/professional way of handling IE users is using Conditional Comments.

As at least one commenter was curious how this is done, here’s how.

The Problem

Internet Explorer, particularly versions less than 7, is quite simply a pain to work with. If you design a site …

Pimpin’ XP With Zune Theme

As someone who makes their living sitting in front of this silicon and liquid crystal box, I guess it’s little surprise that every few months I get itchy and feel the need to redecorate my system a bit.

It was just this desire for change that led me to skin my Windows XP machine to look just like a Mac OSX system. Largely that depended on WindowBlinds, a program that allows you to do all sorts of creative …

How To: Joomla Multi-Language Content Support

This is a quick and basic “how to” for anyone looking to add multi-language support to their content in Joomla 1.5. Eventually I imagine the folks over at the Joom!Fish project will get around to updating their excellent component, but until then anyone that’s in need of multi-lingual content using Joomla 1.5 is SOL.

My switch from the Joomla 1.0.x series to the new (and much improved) Joomla 1.5 series is still quite recent. I’m planning a post outlining the …
