Several big CMSs are a good thing for competition.
True with all things eh?

I think Typo3 and Drupal are Joomla's big contenders. I've not done much work with Typo3, but from my experiences with Drupal, I've little ambition to switch over to using it as my 'go-to'.

I agree that Drupal has some semantical advantages to Joomla - but design-wise I find it a bit cumbersome to work with, though maybe it's just that I've not spend as much time with it as I have Joomla.

The one I've got my eye on now is sNews. Single core file - pretty nifty.

I would agree, Joomla 1.5 seems such a huge huge improvement. Really basic things like SEF URLs and a good tagging system made it unusable for many projects. But it did have a good selection of templates and a good user/developer community. How add-in modules interact with each other is not key for me - can the map link to articles in a sane way, for example.

Yet at the same time, some other CMSs which were superior to Joomla for many projects, or just new, but lacked in the themeing department, have also made big strides in their deficiencies.
